We rely on our memory function every day. Something as effortless as driving across town to pick up your dry cleaning requires the use of memory. The route to the cleaners does too, as well as remembering that you needed to stop there in the first place. Unfortunately, lots of people out there think that their memory is fading with age, or wasn't very good in the first place. I'm happy to tell you that this is normally not the case! How do you improve your memory? There are many approaches out there that you can effortlessly employ right away in reaching your goal of a better memory. What do you do when you want to get better abs? You give them a good daily workout. You can do the same thing with your memory. The "use it or lose it" saying applies to your brain too. The more often you give your brain a workout, the better it will perform.

One's own personal perception of their memory is important when trying to improve its performance. When people constantly tell themselves that they always have trouble remembering things, the power of the mind wins out and that becomes a barrier to memory. Just try not to be negative about your abilities and be proactive about taking the time to improve them. Positive attitude brings positive results! This positive thinking will go a long way in improving the ability of your memory.

Being more attentive is something that is extremely important when it comes to remembering things efficiently. Have you ever met someone, and shortly thereafter forgot their name? The trick is to block out the distractions and focus on the person's name, then it will get to your brain and you'll remember it later. One useful tip for remembering the name of a new acquaintance is to repeat that individual's name back while meeting them. You should try it, it's a simple trick that you can start using right away, and rest assured, you'll find it very effective.

I remember when I was young, I was told that repetition was the easiest way to remember information. Do you remember how you used to memorize things for school? I'll wager that you recited it again and again, until you were able to do it by heart. Try the same trick tomorrow when you're at the mall to remember where you left you car. "It's on level 5, row B." Just repeat what you want to remember a few times until you can recall it easily.

So, how do you improve your memory?  I've just listed only a couple of things you can do to eliminate some frustrating memory related situations. Make it a goal to improve one trouble spot where you are having difficulty remembering, and put to use one or two of the strategies I've listed above. It won't take too long, and you will see that you are remembering information more quickly and easily. Once you have mastered a few basic techniques, you can move on and try some new things to supercharge your memory.

Imagine you are a successful just graduated pharmacist with a strong future and upward mobility, but then one day something happens that changes your life forever, an accident which renders your mental faculties less than adequate to do your job, challenges with memory and brain function. Yes, such tragic events do occur, and traumatic brain injury occurs in our society to some American every 23-seconds, a stroke every 40-seconds. Okay so let's talk.

Not long ago, I interviewed Nicholina Bennett, a superstar of humanity who is now assisting others who have had brain injuries. We talked about her accident, quite tragic, as a Semi-Tow Truck knocked her car into a ditch and changed her life forever. Today, her mental faculties are strong, and she is focused on a new mission - to help others. She's teamed up with "Life After Brain Injury" a nonprofit group out of Simi Valley, CA and she is establishing her own group in the Coachella Valley, also in California - not only for brain injury survivors, but also as a support group for care-givers (Survivor Driven and Caregiver Backed).

No, not all are as fortunate as Nicholina, if you can call her accident that changed her life fortunate, but she's working forward and progressing and she is beating her condition a little at a time. Today she is a mentor, group organizer, and a survivor. He goal is to help others in the community re-build their social lives, improve their memory, set new goals, stay motivated, explore options, and thrive using the group as their support. In fact, I was so impressed with her cause that I just had to write this article to tell you about it.

How will Nicholina accomplish this? Well, she's already working on building her core group, and team leadership, and getting new members, she understands it may be slow building but someone as triumphant, dedicated, and persevering as her - there can be only one reality to this future - she's going to get this done. Indeed, her first group meeting will be held at the local Starbuck on the patio, allowing new potential members to meet in a safe and neutral place.

The group is opened to anyone with a brain injury - returning veterans, stroke victims, car accidents, or sports injuries. Ms. Bennett tells me the important thing that she wants those with traumatic brain injuries to consider is; "where you go from here" and that they need to stay in the game to get better and not become victims or frustrated that those things we all take for granted are so very hard and some of those basic skills must be learned all over again.

You know what, she's right!

What a wonderful life's mission from someone with the strength of character to never give up.

It appears to me that we need such groups like this forming organically around our nation to make it just a little easier to cope with those curve balls that are thrown at us as we go through life. I'd like you to please consider all this and think on it. Why not check out the "Life After Brain Injury" website if you get a chance.
