Although there are many different variables that impact how effective an individual will be as a leader, perhaps none is as indicative of his potential as the goals he sets. Many individuals, seeming to fear failure or ridicule, avoid setting goals that may not be that simple to achieve. They settle for the mediocrity associated with aiming solely for low and easily achievable goals, rather than setting their sights higher by dedicating themselves rather to loftier, more ambitious goals. Henry David Thoreau famously stated, "In the long run we only hit what we aim for." This applies in multiples to the potentialities of effective leadership, where the most effective leaders have always had a dream that drove their vision, and then set goals to accomplish what they felt needed to get done!

1. Effective leaders are always driven by their dreams. In my over three decades of identifying, qualifying, training and consulting to a multitude of leaders from a variety of organizations, I have observed that there has never been a truly effective leader who did not hit the ground running the first day in office. This required preparation, study, knowledge, judgment and expertise, and the ability to make quality, well thought out decisions. A great leader is driven by his vision, and publicly states goals, both to motivate himself and to enlist motivated followers, supporters and donors. Unfortunately, I have also observed far too many who ascend to leadership unprepared, lacking the essential ability or desire to effectively communicate, and often stating that they are ruling populists, and would be led by the wishes of his members. Bluntly speaking, anyone adopting that type of attitude is ill- equipped to be a leader, because leaders should effectively and thoroughly listen to others, while being driven by what they feel are needed goals to achieve. A great leader communicates why these goals are so important, and reaches for the stars, so even if he does not achieve all his goals, he sets a direction for others that follow, and almost always still achieves more than someone who commences accepting mediocrity as his direction.

2. A goal is basically a dream plus an action plan for accomplishment, with a date attached to it. Lofty goals create an aura of excitement and pursuit, creating a motivating, optimistic environment. It is important to remember that simply because someone ascends to, or is elected to a position of leadership, that does not automatically make him qualified and/ or ready to be a true leader.

Are you prepared to be a leader? What are your goals for your organization? Are you able and willing to forgo popularity, if necessary, to achieve what needs to be done? Will you create to greatness, or settle for mediocrity?
